Beginning with Understanding, Bringing Ferns into Daily Life and Nature Education

Introducing Taiwanese Native Ferns to the Public

Taiwan is rich in plant biodiversity, with native fern species widely distributed across diverse environments—from high mountains and lowlands to stream valleys, drainage ditches, and even urban corners.

Although ferns are frequently encountered in our daily lives, their significant contributions to ecological systems are often overlooked.

Through the observation and study of Taiwan’s native ferns, this project explores their roles in environmental purification, soil stabilization, and traditional food and medicinal applications. These findings are further extended into educational initiatives, environmental design, and interactive experiences, aiming to enhance public awareness and understanding of ferns.

Ultimately, the project seeks to emphasize the close relationship between humans and ferns, and to raise greater awareness of the ecological value of Taiwan’s native ferns and the importance of their conservation.

About FERN LINEAGE

“Fern Lineage” derives its name from the dual meanings of fern genealogy and relational systems, symbolizing the intricate connections between Taiwan’s native ferns and their environmental, medicinal, edible, and ornamental contexts.

The project aims to construct an approach to understanding that integrates knowledge, sensory perception, and aesthetics—allowing ferns to be seen not merely as plants quietly growing in the corners of nature, but as life forms closely intertwined with our daily lives, worthy of appreciation and deeper understanding.

Flowing lines and layered compositions convey the vitality of ferns and a calm sense of growth, symbolizing the symbiosis between humans and nature, while realistic illustrations aid in identifying the distinctive features of different fern species.

This three-volume set explores ferns through three lenses: Medicine & Food (Green), Environment (Blue), and Ornamentation (Purple). Through layered designs and iridescent laser-cut paper, the books invite readers to see their own reflection amidst the fronds. It is a visual dialogue that celebrates the inseparable bond between humanity and the aesthetic world of ferns.

This series is based on native Taiwanese plant species. By organizing folk usage practices and relevant references, it identifies the value of these species in skincare and medicinal applications and translates their properties into restorative products for everyday use.
